Our first Spotlight athlete for the month of October is Eric Oliver! Eric has come along way since starting his health and fitness journey. He is one of those guys who shows up early day, addresses his weaknesses constantly and approaches every workout with some legit intensity. Congrats Eric you have earned it and the next month is on us!

When Did you start CrossFit?

Why Did you start CrossFit? 

My brother is in the army and he would always mention crossfit to me. I had been working out on my own for a year prior but I was having a very hard time staying motivated. After discussing it with Michelle we came in and joined together.

What kept you coming back/motivated?

 CrossFit was unlike anything I had ever done. It quickly became more than just a schedule slot for me. It afforded me an opportunity to always be competing, whether it was against my friends or myself. I felt at ease immediately with everyone there being friendly and encouraging. Being the slowest that day just meant that you got the largest cheering section.

How long did it take you to go from Basics to CrossFit? 

10 weeks from basics to CrossFit.

What is the best thing you have gotten out of doing CrossFit?

The best thing I have gotten out of CrossFit is a place my whole family can go. Its something we can all do together. We may all have different reasons for going and different goals while we are there but we use the same place and the same workouts and the same great trainers and teachers. What great joy i get from watching Michelle do her first pull-up, Mackenzie doing butterflies before me, or Malloree knocking the pizza from josh’s hand. Its so much more than a gym.

What is the one thing you have done here that you never thought you could do?

Run the 5k. A couple of years ago I was over 200 lbs, a 20 year smoker, drank beer by the case. I couldnt walk up the stairs at work without taking a 2 minute break to recover at the top. I could never have imagined running that distance.

What is one goal you have reached? And one goal you still hope to reach?  

Muscle-ups were a nemesis of mine for a bit…consistent double unders will be next. My main goal now is to be more confident on the lifting side. I want to load a bar up and know I am lifting it. Not thinking, hoping, praying or trying to lift it.

How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit? 

We have really made an effort to get rid of most of the bad foods from our life. Competing in the paleo challenge really opened our eyes to the benefits of healthy eating as well as the pitfalls of a bad diet. We do have a few weaknesses here and there but really do make an effort to be mostly clean. I dont think we could have gotten the results we have without switching to the paleo diet. I feel cleaner and younger. I recover faster, heal quicker and just feel overall better than i ever have before.
