Congratulations to Bernadette Delacruz on being named October Spotlight Athlete of the Month! Bernadette started her fitness journey after being diagnosed with hypertension. She was on the right path after changing her nutrition, keeping track of food intake and training for a 5k race but something was driving her to push harder. That drive lead her to try CrossFit for the first time. Since joining Fury just over a year ago Bernadette has not only gotten rid of hypertension but has also increased her overall strength, endurance and has been able to compete in other races including a half marathon. Coach Brandi truly believes Bernadette’s success is driven by her consistency and willingness to try new things as well as pushing herself to be better each day. Below are Bernadette’s responses to the questions we ask our Spotlight Athletes.

“Before you know it, I was showing up because I was hooked and Fury family made working out fun.”

What brought you to CrossFit?

With the continuous support of my husband and kid, I began a long overdue journey to a healthier me.  After years of being obese and being diagnosed with hypertension, I started to track my every bite of food and a friend convinced me to run a 5K.  I made no promises, but gave myself months to train.  To my surprise, I began to lose weight and was awarded 2ndplace for my age division for the 5K.  I thought to myself, there’s got to be more I can do.  I was looking to add to my journey a new life style when a couple of teachers invited me to join them and try out CrossFit Fury.  I was hesitant at first.  I still remember as I drove up the parking lot and sat in the car contemplating and entertaining a personal trainer at another gym.

“After joining Fury, I was able to do my first 10K and then ½ a marathon this year. Not only am I mentally strong, but Fury has helped me physically strong as well.”

What has impacted you the most during your time at Fury?

Being an Accountant and School Board Member, I have surprised a lot with my personality.  I consider myself an extravert so joining Fury fit.  I felt intimidated at first, but after meeting a couple of the staff and members, I was encouraged to stick with it.  Before you know it, I was showing up because I was hooked and Fury family made working out fun.  I LOVE how the coaches take the time to get to know you and your limits OR no limits … THANKS BRANDI … and push you because they know you can when you did not know yourself.

After joining Fury, I was able to do my first 10K and then a half marathon this year.  Not only am I mentally strong, but Fury has helped me to become physically strong as well.  Overall, I have lost 55 lbs, have kept it off and no longer have hypertension.  I never thought I would say that I am hooked on Fury.  I was never athletic growing up, never had joined sports in my whole life, but thanks to Fury, I have learned to be physically healthy and continue with my journey to a healthier me.  Fury has even made me mentally stronger and helped me to not be intimidated to try anything.  THANKS FURY FAMILY!

Congratulations Bernadette on coming so far in your fitness journey! We are proud of you and can’t wait to see what your dedication brings in the future.
