The year’s first Spotlight Athlete of the Month is someone who is quiet when she wants to be but can also be a force to be reckoned with.  Michelle Evers has been coming to Fury for over a year now and has really started making herself known!  She has found her niche with the 6:30 CrossFitters, joined the competitive Bomb Squad training group and knocked our socks off with her die hard spirit at her first CrossFit competition back in October.  Check out her journey through CrossFit.

When Did you start CrossFit? I started CrossFit in the summer of 2012 in Des Moines while I was on a clinical rotation for Physical Therapy school.
Why Did you start CrossFit? I started CrossFit to mix up my current work outs and try something different while in a new city.  I had caught the weight lifting bug when I shaved 14 minutes off my half marathon time by running less and adding in “heavy” squats, deadlifts, and Olympic lifts into my training.

What kept you coming back/motivated?
Being surrounded by a community of supportive and motivated individuals that continue to push me keeps me coming back for more.  The variability of the workouts keeps me challenged and the endorphins after a lung-burning workout are always a plus too!
How long did it take you to go from Basics to CrossFit Prep? When I came to Fury I had already been crossfitting and had experience with Olympic weight lifting so hopped right into CrossFit classes.

Michelle also competed in our Furious 6 competition with follow Bride to Be Stephanie Savage.

What is the best thing you have gotten out of doing CrossFit? The motivation to push myself harder during workouts and the confidence to lift heavier than I did at my previous commercial gym.

What is the one thing you have done here that you never thought you could do? I never thought I would be able to beat my fiancé, Cameron, in a few of the Open workouts this past year!  (He can, however, out jump and sprint me by a long shot!)

What is one goal you have reached? And one goal you still hope to reach? One goal I have reached was competing in a CrossFit competition.  Competing on a team at SicFit was a great learning experience and surprised me in being quite a bit of fun!  Still working on those muscle ups!
How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit? I have always eaten fairly clean, however definitely eat less carbs since starting CrossFit.  I do, however, continue to enjoy an occasional burrito or quesadilla!
How has the paleo diet affected your workouts/life? I am actually vegetarian and have been so for the past 16 years!  I eat eggs and cheese occasionally, but no meat, fish, or poultry.
Additional Comments: I would like to thank the staff and community at CrossFit Fury, especially Alfred Rohde and the 6:30 class for all your support along the way!  Much appreciation and thanks to Cameron Moore for patiently teaching me the basics of Olympic lifting and encouraging me to try CrossFit!
