Melissa Hahne is not only a wife, a mom and a Crossfitter but she is also a professional ballerina. Melissa has been dancing since she was 3 years old and turned professional at 17. While Freelancing she was given the role of a lifetime, Myrtha in “Giselle”. In this Ballet, she got to dance along side Russian prima ballerina, Olga Pavlova, and while it was an amazing experience, Hahne realized she was not strong enough to take on such demanding role compared to her counterpart. It was after this experience that Hahne, turned to CrossFit. Her husband, Josh, was already a member and enjoying it but it was more the technicality of CrossFit she liked. “CrossFit is so technical and so is Ballet so I was really drawn to it. After dancing with Pavlova, I realized just doing Ballet wasn’t enough. I knew I had to get stronger and CrossFit seemed like the best way. I didn’t consider anything else”.
Hahne also turned to CrossFit because she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis two years ago and her Doctor told her the best way to ward off the symptoms was exercise and the Paleo Diet. Soon after being diagnosed, she began experiencing some weakness in her right arm and she knew it could spread or take over other functions and she wasn’t going to let MS take over her life. She was not going to look back and regret anything so she had to do whatever it took to beat her MS. Since doing CrossFit and eating Paleo, she hasn’t had any relapses. “Since I joined, I haven’t had any symptoms, the weakness in my arm is gone and I know it is controlled by my eating, therapy and exercise”.
After a year of CrossFit, Melissa says she is in the best shape of her life and the healthiest she has felt in years. She credits CrossFit for how she feels and says, “CrossFit makes me feel like I can go and do anything, Run, bike, dance-it’s an enabling sport and I love it”. Hahne is currently dancing in “Paquita and the Other Work”, a classic Ballet at the Tempe Center for the Arts this weekend, Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are available through Groupon for just $11.
