This month we decided to spotlight not one but two athletes and they just so happened to be married. Kristin and James Coleman joined Fury back on September and were determined from the start. They jumped right into Prep and haven’t looked back. Kristin is in CrossFit already and James is right behind her. Not only have they embraced all what CrossFit is about, they have recruited their family as well. Both Kristin’s brother, Geraldo, and sister, Sarah, have joined Fury too. When Did you start CrossFit?
Why Did you start CrossFit?
JC: I wanted a new physical challenge and CrossFit looked like fun.
KC: I used to compete in the USPA (United States Powerlifting Association) and while I had strength, I did not achieve or concentrate on overall fitness the way I had originally intended when I began working out again after the birth of our daughter (now 4yrs old). I wanted to tone up/lean out and those unfortunately are not always traits of the best powerlifters so my fitness goal was derailed by my strength goals. I was referred to CrossFit Fury by a friend and I knew after my first workout that this was the way to bridge my passion for lifting with my weight loss goals.
What kept you coming back/motivated?
JC: The challenge of the workouts and constantly striving to do better.
KC: I love the energy at Fury – the workouts are incredible (and simple that all you have to do is show up, for beginners that’s such a great thing that you don’t have to plan a workout) but the people, coaches and other athletes are constantly encouraging and supporting you to keep moving, keep trying and never to give up.
How long did it take you to go from Basics to CrossFit Prep?
We jumped right into prep from the start as a supplement to our basics class because we love the weightlifting aspect and knew that there was a lot of technique/form that we needed to learn when it came to the Olympic (Oly) lifts that would be essential later on.
What is the best thing you have gotten out of doing CrossFit?
JC: Better overall health – looking better, feeling better..and sleeping better!
KC: Better health for sure, but I’d like to think that the energy and positivity inspires greater well being and just a better attitude and outlook toward things in your everyday life.
What is the one thing you have done here that you never thought you could do?
JC: Double Unders
KC: Rope climbs! Granted, some days are better than others, but I get up there : )
What is one goal you have reached? And one goal you still hope to reach?
JC: I lost 35 lbs! I hope to improve my flexibility and get handstand push ups.
KC: I made it to Crossfit! After just under 5 months at Fury, I “graduated” and I love the intensity of that level of workout, game changer! Next step/goal- I hope to work my way toward meeting or exceeding recommended lifts, doing everything RX’d at some point, no modification needed… and maybe becoming Aimee’s lifting partner : )
How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit?
JC: We are eating much healthier, preparing meals more regularly and dramatically reduced my alcohol intake.
KC: I try to be as Paleo friendly as possible, we enjoy a treat now and again but overall we shop for groceries very differently since doing our first Paleo Challenge back in Oct/Nov and love our new approach to eating and fueling our bodies.
How has the paleo diet affected your workouts/life?
JC: Eating good absolutely helps both performance and recovery time, and just feels good.
KC: Paleo recipes and cookbook ideas shared by members and fellow Paleo Challengers has made eating Paleo fun, creative and a family affair; we enjoy cooking together and trying new dishes..a Paleo diet doesn’t have to be boring, it is GOOD! Educating ourselves on how different foods affect your body, digestion, etc..enlightening, read up on it – Robb Wolf!
