It never ceases to amaze me what a group of dedicated and highly motivated people can accomplish, and I am truly proud to be part of it. In approximately five weeks time, the Arizona CrossFit Community was able to reach far and wide to help one of our own in a time of need. Together we raised approximately $30,000 for 13 year old Dominic Peranzi and his family as they battle Germinoma Brain Cancer.
Nearly 100 athletes participated in the 12.5 Open workout officially wrapping up the first level of qualification for the 2012 CrossFit Games. We saw some amazing performances from all competitors further solidifying that the Southwest Region and Arizona in particular is producing top level athletes. We now have a little over a month until Regionals which will be held in Castle Rock Colorado on May 4th through 6th. After the Open, Fury is well represented with Will Trujilo and Aimee Berencsi both in the top 10 and our team, Bomb Squad, is tied for 5th! Moving forward, we have to be more focused then ever because only the top 3 men, women and teams advance to the Home Depot Center in July.
After the heats finished and the chalk settled we focused on the heart of the event, Dominic. With an outpouring of support from CrossFit Now, CrossFit Purgatory, BOTB, CrossFit Arms, Core CrossFit, CrossFit 480, CrossFit Scottsdale, Invicta Fighting Championships, It Aint Chemo and all of their members we presented the Peranzi Family with our donation and headed to the park for some Tug of War! Once the tents were up and our bellies were full teams of 10 competed in a round robin style tournament. CrossFit Now went undefeated through the round robin but met a rejuvenated Team Fury in the finals. It was a tight battle and in the end Fury took the win but CrossFit Now took home the trophy, raising over $10,000-more than double the buy in amount!
Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success! To the Peranzi Family, I think it is safe to say that the Arizona community is here for you and together we will fight. Also, and just as important, to all of the dependable volunteers who may of just been coming out to watch a workout but ended up with a full time job, THANK YOU! We appreciate you and will not forget what you do for us!
