Spotlight Athlete of October: Elaina Hassan

Elaina, or Lainy, as she is known around the gym, has come a long way in her time at Fury.  Elaina joined Fury back in June of 2010 in hopes of getting into better shape to help her perform better at her job, she is a Phoenix Police Officer.  She joined Fury with little knowledge of CrossFit but wanted a change in her workout regime.  Lainy’s intensity and motivation to do her best can be seen in every workout and we can only feel safer knowing she is protecting our streets!

When Did you join CrossFit Fury:June 2010. How long did it take you to go from Basics to CrossFit: 7 months

Why Did you start CrossFit:I was looking for something that would push me beyond my limits and comfort zone. I wasn’t satisfied with the LA Fitness atmosphere and the lackluster results it provided. I needed structure and guidance.

What kept you coming back/motivated: How quickly I felt and saw results! I am addicted to the intensity of every workout; from my first class of burpee ladders with Kelly McGuire to todays snatch complex and wall climbs. I also enjoy the camaraderie from all of the coaches and other members of the Fury family. I look forward to learning new attributes daily from all who attend CrossFit Fury. Everyday is a challenge, and I love it!

What is the best thing you have gotten out of doing CrossFit: Confidence. I never would have imagined I was capable of pushing myself so far. I can feel my confidence grow everyday I attend class. I also have a stronger sense of confidence while in uniform. I feel stronger and I’ve been told by the people I serve that it shows.

What is the one thing you have done here that you never thought you could do? Kipping pull-ups. I didn’t think I could get to proper technique and now I can jump on that bar and it feels natural.

What is one goal you have reached? And one goal you still hope to reach? I have become a stronger runner. I was very pleased with the last hills run due to shaving off 2 and a half minutes from my previous time. I have 2 goals I will achieve and they are muscle ups and handstand walking. With more practice, I will be able to reach both of those goals in due time.

How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit? I didn’t care how little or how much I ate because I just wanted to do anything else except monitor what I ingested. When Peter asked everyone to write the last 3 meals we ate, I was embarrassed and knew I needed to change my diet immediately. I did my homework on the Paleo diet and changed my eating habits. When I joined the Paleo Challenge I knew this is how I will be eating indefinitely. Food tastes so much better and I’ve become a decent cook!

How has the paleo diet affected your workouts/life? I feel better about my body now! I used to try and hide my body in baggy t-shirts and basketball shorts and now I feel great in clothes that fit well. I have never been a size 7 in jeans..ever. I feel extremely confident in my appearance in uniform and my command staff have praised me for making the change. Theres no turning back now!
