Summer for the Kids

It is starting to get really hot outside.  It is going to get unbearably hot soon.  With your kids out of school and looking for things to do, do you have a plan?  When you can’t send them outside to ride bikes because their tires will melt to the road and they can’t play at a park without heat exhaustion there seem to be few options left.  One of the easiest things to do is let them hang out in front of a TV or computer for hours at a time and enjoy the air conditioning.  Unfortunately, that is a great way to loose any sense of fitness they gained during the cooler months.

In a recent post about limiting T.V. usage, Whole9Life.com published some facts about the T.V. habits of typical kids:

  • Number of minutes per week parents spend in meaningful conversation with their children: 3.5
  • Number of minutes per week the average child watches television: 1,680
  • Hours per year the average American youth spends in school: 900 hours
  • Hours per year the average American youth watches television: 1500

Now I know it can be hard, or nearly impossible, to completely elminate time in front of the screen.  But try not to fall into the easy pattern of letting the kids hang out in the cool living room and living on movies and cartoons.  Try to fit in exercise, sports or just outdoor activities in the early morning or evenings.  Get your kids moving this summer.  Life if full of reasons to avoid working out, eating right and accepting mediocrity.  Don’t let the summer heat be another one of those excuses.
